What is an E-Bike or PEDLEC?

Pedelec stands for PEDal ELEctric Cycle, also known as EAPCs (Electrically Assisted Pedal Bicycles).

Pedelec is a generic term for an electric bicycle powered in a hybrid way by an electric motor and by muscle power. The electric motor greatly assists the pedalling force. Without pedalling (without crank movement) the motor delivers no power.

As pedelecs are classed as bicycles the following instructions should be followed:

■ Cycle paths: Cycle paths can be used without exception

■ Driving licence: no licence necessary.

■ Helmet: basically helmets are not mandatory. However, it is recommended you wear a suitable and certified helmet.

■ Insurance: with pedelecs it is not necessary to take out liability insurance. In order to maintain its high standard, KTM surpasses the requirements of the following standards and guidelines: Standard EN 15194, bicycles – electrically power assisted cycles – EPAC – bicycles

How fast will an E-Bike go?

Most electric bikes will assist you up to 15.5mph as this is the legal limit.

Beyond this, they fall into moped territory and like a S-Pedelec will require registration and tax, and you may even be required to hold a CBT (Motorcycle) Licence.

How far can I travel?

It largely depends on the size of the battery.

Most quality E-Bikes have a range of between 50 and up to as much as 110 miles range without requiring charging.

Our KTM product's have a handy Bosch Calculator feature, which can help gauge range, depending on User Weight, Terrain, Battery, Motor and E-Bike Frame Style.

Do I need a licence?

Standard E-Bike's require no licence. Top Speed: 15.5mph. Motor: Electric Pedal Assist. Licence: None

Speed-Pedelec's require a licence. Top Speed: 28mph (assisted). Motor: Electric Pedal Assist. Licence: CBT or full Car Licence before 1st Feb 2001 50cc.

How long will it take to charge?

Most E-Bike batteries will fully charge from empty in 4-6 hours depending on the battery size.

Currently we do not stock any E-Bikes which have the ability to charge as you pedal - but most of the battery units will detach from the frame, so you can simply remove and charge safely at home or in the office at work.

Does an E-Bike need Servicing?

Yes, like all bicycles and motorcycles, regular maintenance and repairs are required to keep the vehicle in the best and safest working condition.

We offer Servicing for those E-Bikes bought from us, and if you'd like to know more about the Service Options we offer, please click here.

Are they Waterproof?

Drive systems and components are designed to be watertight. This is particularly true for use under normal riding conditions, including heavy rain.

However, do not use a steam jet or high-pressure cleaner to clean your E-Bike.
